I can see clearly now, the groovy day has come…
I think this will be a shorter one. In the words of my departed father, who was always committed to communicating a stark and honest diagnosis of the world as he saw it, I “can be a bit of a windbag.”
We don’t want to perpetuate that narrative, so we will stick with video primarily today.
One of the great pleasures of this renewed commitment to making the band into a job for me has been communicating with new people who are listening in. I’ve had conversations with a grandpa in England who performs folk music in the care home where he resides, a father in Ontario for whom music is providing a path through a very rough patch (I know that one from the inside), an American songwriter whose song I think we will cover sometime soon(ish), and lots more.
A local example showed up in the form of Mario, who loved an old mashup we did of two oldies so much that he demanded a new version. We agreed that the song need a refresh, but with half the band stuck elbow-deep in university mid-terms, we were slow to organize. But yesterday we got it done, as some of you may have already seen from the clips on the socials.
But for email subscribers only, here is an unlisted Youtube link to the full version!
And then Mario went exploring in our back-catalog. What he found was something even I had forgotten. Apparently we have been doing the same mashup for a very long time. Mick was learning the drums, Simon was singing constantly as always, and Joe had just barely arrived on the scene.
Hope you enjoy watching the progression. Mick will argue that he is a good deal tighter on drums now. I think I look much better with a beard. God in his kindness sees fit to give men an opportunity to cover a face like that up. And we will have to see if we can convince Joe to make another dancing cameo. This will not be an easy task, he is now 13 and very cool…
Thank you Mario for inspiring all this!
