He’s barely cleaned the crud of mud and blood

From under his fingernails

But he knows the way and the truth of life

And all that it entails

Now he’s thinking about what will come after all

But the sharks you owe are never far from home

When there’s hell to pay

But he’s feeling elite when he hits the street

On feet still made of clay

And now he’s working on me ‘cause Glory be!

He’s in free fall

He’s a god and he’s an animal

And though they might seem incompatible

The only problem comes from thinking he’s all done

When he’s only just begun

He’s rarely thinking of things like peace and love

Only itches to be scratched

And though you can bet he’ll feel some regret

It’s only ever after the fact

Past reason what you hunted you hate now

You choked on that bait

But sometimes the crime gets in the hero’s mind

And then it all falls through

Is he a pig in the muck or just a sheep that’s stuck?

He’s a product of the terrible two

‘Cause the scary part is there’s an option in your heart

To become what you hate

We are gods and we are animals

And though they might seem incompatible

The only problem comes in thinking we’re all done

When we’ve only just begun

Choose now your fight or flight!

To give up or give chase!

.... or better to just stay home and wait?

If there’s a Man with a Plan you know that you can’t

Accuse Him of being boring

Because though we might be out of luck

We’re most definitely stuck

In the middle of an excellent story

So Behold the Man with a proper dose of shock and awe

You can trust the poets’ guidance son

As you look over the fence

To tell you things you can not know yourself

Save through the damage of experience

Just hit the deck when you suspect that your direction’s wrong

We are gods, and we are animals

And though we might seem incompatible

The only problem comes in thinking we’re all done

When we’ve only just begun
